The Fruit of the Spirit & Self-Care: A CHW’s Guide to Well-being
As Community Health Workers, we give so much of ourselves to support others. But how often do we extend that same care to ourselves? The Fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—aren’t just principles for serving others. They are essential for self-care, too.
When we nurture these attributes in our lives, we strengthen our emotional, spiritual, and mental well-being—making us even more effective in the communities we serve.
🌱 Here are three action steps to cultivate self-care through the Fruit of the Spirit:
Practice Self-Compassion (Love & Kindness): Speak to yourself with the same love and encouragement you give to others. Set healthy boundaries to protect your time and energy.
Find Moments of Stillness (Peace & Patience): Pause during your day to breathe, pray, or reflect. Even a few minutes of quiet can help reset your spirit.
Stay Rooted in Your Purpose (Faithfulness & Self-Control): Remember why you do this work. Keep a journal, meditate on scripture, or connect with a mentor to stay grounded.
💡 Remember: Self-care is not selfish—it’s essential. When you care for your mind, body, and spirit, you bring your best self to the work God has called you to do.
Which Fruit of the Spirit resonates most with your self-care journey? How do you incorporate faith into your well-being?
