One STRENGTH Pillar

Nurture: Cultivate healthy relationships, habits, and growth
Nurture is the practice of giving consistent care and attention to what helps life flourish. It means creating space for healthy relationships, supportive habits, and personal growth. Nurturing begins with noticing what needs care and choosing small, meaningful actions that help it thrive over time.
This pillar encourages attention to the conditions that support growth. Relationships benefit from listening, encouragement, and time together. Healthy habits become stronger when they are realistic and supported by daily routines. Growth takes patience, room to learn, and recognition of progress that may be gradual or difficult to see.
To live with nurture is to make care a regular practice. This may look like checking in with someone, protecting time for a nourishing routine, or offering patience when learning something new. Each thoughtful action creates an opportunity to strengthen connection, support well-being, and give what matters the care it needs to continue growing.
"Nurture holds with gentle strength."
Stephanie Toney

Take a moment to examine where you are right now, not where you expected to be, but where you actually are. Explore your current season through three areas:
Relationships: Where could asking what someone needs help you offer more thoughtful support?
Habits: Which routine needs adjusting to better support your energy, time, or well-being?
Growth: Where would more encouragement, guidance, or room to learn help you move forward?
Choose one area where needs have changed. What would nurturing that area look like now?
Choose one way to adapt your care this week
Nurture begins with paying attention and responding to what is needed. A familiar approach may need to evolve as circumstances change. Choose one area from your reflection and consider how your care could become more responsive.
Perhaps someone needs a listening ear before advice. A routine may work better at a different time of day. A goal may benefit from guidance, a gentler pace, or space to try again.
Make one thoughtful adjustment this week, then notice whether it offers the support you intended. Let that response guide your next step.
"Gentle strength knows when to hold close and when to give room to grow."
Stephanie Toney

Behind the STRENGTH™
Nurture looks like noticing what needs care and adapting that care as needs change. A relationship, habit, or goal may need different support than it once did. Nurturing means staying attentive to those changes and responding with patience, intention, and understanding.
Care can take several forms: listening, adjusting, encouraging, and making space. Listening helps clarify what support would be useful. Adjusting a routine can make a healthy habit easier to sustain. Encouragement can help someone feel supported during an unfamiliar challenge. Making space allows learning and growth to unfold at a manageable pace.
Nurture becomes practical through a thoughtful response. In a relationship, that may mean asking what would help before offering advice. In a daily routine, it may mean changing an expectation to fit current responsibilities. When supporting growth, it may mean offering guidance while leaving room for someone to find their own way.
As circumstances evolve, care can evolve with them. Paying attention to how support is received creates opportunities to respond more thoughtfully and cultivate relationships, habits, and environments where growth can continue.
“Nurture supports growth without squeezing the life out of what it loves.”
Stephanie Toney

A postcard from the Pear Suite team in Portland brought a thoughtful moment of appreciation.
Their handwritten message recognized the partnership and the work of bringing organizations together to create meaningful opportunities for CHWs and the communities they serve.
This gesture is a reminder that nurture can happen in ordinary moments. Taking time to express gratitude and recognize a shared effort helps people feel valued and strengthens the relationships that make continued growth possible.
