Baby Formula Shortage – Via CINCH (Consortium for Infant and Child Health, EVMS)
As the nation deals with an unprecedented shortage of baby formula, Sentara Healthcare is offering tips and highlighting a number of resources available to the community. Please click HERE to learn more!
The Florida Department of Health has compiled a list of helpful tips listed below:
Explore alternative retail outlets for their formula needs. For more information, visit HHS.gov.
Choose a formula that is safe. For more information on choosing a formula that’s safe, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) pages on the topic.
Do not make homemade formula. See the FDA’s page for more information.
Do not purchase counterfeit formula. Counterfeit formula labels may misrepresent the quality or identity of a formula. Visit the FDA’s page for more information.
Do not feed your baby or toddler recalled powder formula. Check to see if you have recalled formula by visiting Abbott's website or calling 1-800-986-8540.
Do not throw away recalled formula. Return it to the store or call Abbott at 1-800-986-8540.

Enhancing Personal Resilience and Managing Stress
While stress is something we all experience, it can have negative effects if it is ongoing, disrupting sleep, immune, and digestive systems. The COVID-19 pandemic has added on to stress, leaving people struggling to cope. According to Kaiser Family Foundation research, the proportion of U.S. adults who said worry and stress linked to COVID-19 was negatively affecting their mental health rose from 32 percent in March 2020 to over half (53 percent) in July 2020, and as of March 2021 had dropped only to 47 percent.
This page from the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response describes individual resilience and how to help support it, including choosing activities to foster a sense of control, coping with stress in healthy ways, and being able to manage strong feelings. The page also offers ways to help strengthen resilience by doing things like volunteering, developing coping skills, creating plans and disaster kits, and more.
Building Resilience in Children Through Coping Skills
This page from the American Red Cross has information for parents and other caregivers on how to support children before, during, and after an emergency or disaster. There are videos and other resources to help caregivers discuss with children what they can expect if an emergency occurs. The page includes resources that can help children understand how they may be feeling so they can learn how to better cope with their emotions.
The American Psychological Association developed this article about resilience to help readers understand resilience and how to strengthen resilience over time. The article covers how to build connections, keep things in perspective, accept change, and seek help if needed.
